It is that time of year! The time of year when produce is coming out of your ears and eyes and you have no idea what to do with it all (if you garden), or it is so cheap that you think about the long winter months and the crazy prices of produce.
Canning and preserving food has been a part of my life from the time I was born. We as a family and along with my Grandparents, used to all gather together and have an assembly line for canning my Grandpas famous dill pickles. My favourite part was to stuff the jars with the fresh dill and garlic. It was honestly a highlight for me in the summer time. My mother is well known for her wealth of canning knowledge and is often the one everyone calls with questions. Her cold storage room is something that we should all be jealous of.
Now that I have a family of my own, I have to think about what ways I can help us have a well balanced diet in the winter months on the cold windy prairies. What I like to can is a bit different them my Mom, I do the staples of tomatoes, pickles, squashes, pumpkin, relish, jams, peaches, applesauce and much more. But I added things like pickled jalapenos (who wants to spend 3$ for a tiny metal jar... not this girl), roasted red peppers, and green enchilada sauce. I still have a big list of things I want to try and can.
Now after having all of these wonderful contributors adding to my round up today, I have an even bigger list of canning I would like to try. There is a great variety of different dietary needs, we have some Paleo, Vegan, Gluten Free and basic recipes that anyone can do. So lets give a warm welcome to all the wonderful Food Bloggers of Canada members!
Don't they all look so amazing! I have such a love for preserving food and being able to look into my pantry and see all the beautiful colours of food filled jars. I love that I know what is in them and what goes into my families bellies.
Happy Monday everyone!
A little about me
Just a BC girl living in a Alberta world on a cattle ranch nestled near Kananaskis country. I love all things food, my husband and my two beautiful children. I am always looking for inspiration through the world around me.
