Do you guys have a flavour combination that just is irresistible to you? Mine is orange and chocolate, I am not ashamed to say that when I get a chocolate orange for Christmas I eat the whole thing within 20 minutes. To me, chocolate and orange is perfect.

This recipe is super simple and actually uses a cake box mix... I know I am using a cake mix which I rarely make things from a box. Why I chose to do this, is because sometimes you might have run out of the ingredients, or you don't have time to measure out everything. I like to keep a few boxed mixes in the pantry for quick emergencies or for time when I run out of ingredients. I did a few changes which elevates the boxed mix and also helps it to taste from scratch.

Chocolate Orange Cake

Ingredients:

1 box of Betty Crocker Classic Devil's Food Cake mix
1 cup of orange juice
1/3 cup of melted salted butter
3 large eggs
For the Icing:
3 containers of Betty Crocker Cream Cheese Icing
2 tablespoons of orange zest
1 teaspoon of orange extract
1 cup of dark chocolate shavings

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350F. Line and grease two 8 inch round pans.

In a large bowl add the dry cake mix and break up the lumps. Add all the wet ingredients and beat with either a whisk or a spatula for 2 minutes.

Divide into the two prepared pans. Bake for 30 minutes or until the center is set and when a tooth pick is inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pans on a wire rack for 15 minutes before removing from the pans to cool completely.

In a bowl empty the cream cheese icing into it. Add the orange zest and extract. Mix together.

Cut the cakes in half width wise, so you have 4 pieces. Place one piece on a cake stand and add some icing to coat the top, add another pieces and do the same. Continue the process till you reach the top piece. Ice the outside of the cake evenly with the rest of the icing. Sprinkle the chocolate shavings on top of the cake.

Place in the fridge to allow it to set up for 2 hours before serving.

Chocolate Orange Cake

This cake was so moist, and with the hint of orange in it, it really made for a wonderful cake. You can garnish the top with a few orange slices cut and curled, or with some Terry's chocolate orange slices.

Happy Baking everyone!

I love chocolate and orange together too! Of course, anything chocolate works for me! This cake looks delicious. So crumbly and moist. Love the layers of icing, and you can't beat the convenience of a boxed cake mix!
