Family Day

One thing that I absolutely love, is that for some of the Canadian Provinces we have one day a year that is a holiday dedicated to families. It's always in February and is on a Monday, so it is a STAT holiday so our loved ones can get paid for spending the day with their family.

We sat down as a family a few weeks back to make a plan for our family day. We asked the kids what they would like to do, we really wanted to involve them. We had to celebrate our family day earlier, because my husband will be gone recruiting for football that weekend. We wanted to start making it a tradition to have such a fun holiday that is just for our little family. Most other holidays we spend with my husbands family or we drive out to Kelowna to visit mine, so we thought why not have a holiday especially for us that we can start some of our own traditions.

On Monday two weeks ago for Family Home Evening we sat down with a piece of paper and a pen and planned it out. It is quite funny the ideas little ones have, but we went with what they wanted to do and it was such a fun day.

Here was our day:

7 am: Have smoothies for breakfast.
9 am:  go to Cochrane to the Bulk Barn to buy candy and a Pinata.
10:30 am: Fill pinata and smash it open to get all the candy.
10:45 am: Play a video game.
11:00 am: Eat peanut butter and raisin crackers for lunch and get ready to go.
12:25 pm: Watch Moana at the Theater.
2:45 pm: Go to Joso's indoor play ground.
4 pm: Pick up Pizza 73 for supper.
4:45 pm: Eat dinner.
6 pm: Decorate and eat a cake.

It was a busy day, but filled with lot's of fun and family time. Olivia wanted smoothies for breakfast and Colton wanted peanut butter raisin crackers for lunch, the things small people survive on for meals!

I can't stop laughing at the look on little mans face, its a combination of "cheese" and Marshal the pinata is destroyed!

Joso's was great for our kids, it wasn't too busy, and it wasn't a massive place where both the hubs and I knew we would eventually have to rescue one of the kids. Let's be honest it wouldn't be once it would be multiple times, which is why for now this place works great. It was around $12.00 for both the kids and we were there about 1.5 hours which was perfect to wear them out after sitting through a movie.

See those faces! They are just too much, they were so happy and had such a great day. As you can tell Olivia enjoyed making the cake and has icing all over her forehead!

For your family day this year, even if you are not Canadian, make the day really about you as a family. My husband and I thought it was such a fun day and we were able to just enjoy being a family, everyone got to do something they wanted to do. Family day is just meant to pause your life and focus on what matters, relationships and the ones we love. As my husband and I said to each other it is about building memories and traditions with our children. We want them to look back on their childhood and think "man my life was amazing".

Family Day in Calgary:

For those of you who live in Calgary, there are some fun activities to do locally.

GLOW Downtown Winter Light Festival

Family FISHtival

Eau Clarie Market Family Fun Day

Fort Calgary Winter Fest

These are just a few of the activities going on in the city, check out To Do Canada for more activities available. If you do not live in the YYC Calgary area then go on Google and search Family Day activities for your area. It is a great day to get out into the community and to spend the time as a family exploring local attractions and festivals.

Make it about your family, and have a blast! Family Day is on February 20th in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. In BC, it is on February 13th.

Happy Monday!
