See those two, yeah they are my littles, they are full of spunk and sass but can also be the darndest cutest things on this planet. Let's face it though especially in the summer when the weather is nice, we need a survival guide on how to not go crazy over the summer. When the sun is out kids get stir crazy and so does Mommy, so here are a few suggestions I have on how to have a fun and memorable summer.
Activities With The Littles:

  • Attend a matinee at the Theatre
  • Have a scavenger hunt at a local park
  • Find hiking trails for families
  • Outdoor swimming pools
  • Visit every ice cream shop in town and tick them off one by one
  • Have a water gun/balloon/sponge fight
  • Make popsicles and enjoy them on a really hot day
  • If you have a Zoo, attend the Zoo for the day (You could do a scavenger hunt there as well)
  • Buy a seasons pass for a local amusement park, we have Calaway Park in Calgary and we only live like 10 minutes from it, so even going for an hour will burn off some energy and be fun
  • Build a fort outside
  • Bubbles!!! Find all sorts of things that would make bubbles and go at it. Bubbles entertains for hours with kids
  • Find a local farm and go berry picking, one for me, one for the bucket
  • Find a local pet shelter and volunteer to take the dogs for a walk
  • Pack up a picnic and head to a local park for an outdoor lunch
  • Collect rocks and paint them into fun creations
  • Do day trips to some where fun, the bad lands where dinosaurs roamed is about 1.5 to 2 hours from us and is a fun educational day trip
  • Look up local festivals and bring a bit more culture to your children
  • Museum trips and Historical landmark trips, we have quite a few museums in town and also a place called Heritage Park and they are a great way for kids to learn about our countries history
  • On a rainy day have a PJ party, make a blanket fort and watch a movie
  • Take your kids fishing at a local river or lake, even if you catch nothing the memory will live on
  • Go on a road trip to somewhere new as a family
  • Go camping and get back to nature
  • Have a hot dog and marsh mellow roast
  • Have a lemonade stand
  • Go for a bike ride
  • Find a splash park or splash pad and pack a day worth of snacks and get ready to be wet!
  • Take your kids to Ikea for $1.99 breakfast, or even for their soft serve icecream
  • Go to the library and look for special events or story time

What matters the most to our kids is experiences and time, they will remember you spending time with them. That's all kids ever really want is to be loved and to have someone spend a little bit of time with them. As a mom we can make our jobs a bit easier if we just learn to have a bit of fun. I know I can be totally stressed about all the things that need to get done in the day and that's when I need to stop and check myself and realize the kids don't care if the laundry is still in a pile after 4 days, what they care about is that I get down and play with them or that we go on adventures.

Yesterday the kids were a bit stir crazy so I found an outside scavenger hunt that catered to where we live, so off we went into the prairie horizon and we checked things off our list, we even found a whole set of cow bones!

I am always trying to think of activities to do with them and I will probably add more to this list, what are some things that you like to do with your kids in the summer?
