Valentine's Day Sugar Cookies

Growing up I remember making sugar cookies almost every holiday. My Mom had different cookie cutters and the classic sugar cookie we would make and decorate. That is a tradition I definitely wanted to keep going with my children.

There was flour, sugar, icing, sprinkles and dough everywhere when we were all done, but how happy it made the kids was all worth the disaster my kitchen was. We cooking with children you have to put aside any grand expectations on this perfect cookie. What you do get it half eaten and sometimes slightly licked cookies, so tasty eh!

What I tell myself is we are making memories and that my friends is all that matters. We decided just to use a typical classic sugar cookie recipe.

Classic Sugar Cookie Dough

Ingredients:

1 cup of butter, softened
1 cup of sugar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 egg
1 teaspoon of water
3 cups of all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/4 teaspoon of salt

Directions:

Mix butter, sugar and vanilla on a medium speed and mix until light and fluffy.

Add egg and water and beat until well incorporated.

Add flour, baking soda and salt on a low speed until the dough forms into a more solid state. When done cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for an hour.

Preheat oven to 375F, line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. Remove chilled dough from the bowl and cut into four equal portions. On a lightly floured surface place dough and sprinkle a bit of flour on top as well. Start rolling out dough. Sometimes I have to knead the dough a bit to soften it so it is easier to roll out and not so crumbly.

With a lightly floured cookie cutters start pressing down on the dough and then remove the cut outs and place onto the prepared baking sheets.

Bake cookies for 6 to 8 minutes or until the bottoms and edges are slightly golden brown. Remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack.

Decorate with your favorite buttercream icing, sprinkles, icing gel and any other sugar loaded decorations you could think of.

Valentines Day Sugar Cookies

We like to have different colours for our icing, I find gel colours to be the best for dying the buttercream. Let the kids go at it and have fun, there will be lots of licking their hands. If you want to give some cookies away make those ones yourself so you don't accidentally give them a little extra love in the form of your kids spit!

Well Happy Valentines Day! Do you have big plans?

Enjoy!
